Exploring the Nexus between Migration and Social Positions using a Mixed Methods Approach

Using a mixed methods approach, this article analyses the nexus between migration and social positions drawing on recent survey data migrants who have arrived in Germany after 1994 from Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP), as well qualitative interviews with 26 respondents to survey. Drawing Bourdieusian forms of capital approach (Bourdieu, 1986) applying method Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) SOEP data, we highlight two dimensions structuring Germany: (1) related legal status multiple (2) (trans)national cultural capital. Through cluster analysis based MCA results, then identify describe four profiles characterised by distinct configurations (social class background, education linguistic skills before settlement), (citizenship at migration), experiences cross-border movements positions: ‘foreign working-class,’ middle class,’ ‘adapted German migrants,’ ‘young highly educated urbans.’ The complementary allows us go further understanding some factors that may play role shaping migrants’ position(ing) clusters. In particular, show resources such determination perseverance can be crucial for counter structural constraints their transferring or accessing capital, are also used marker distinction.
